nopal lounger
created for oxide
presented by locki humphrey, in collaboration with craft victoria
oxide presented a collection of production ready, limited release and one-off pieces (furniture, lighting and objects) focusing on material transformation. Working with industrial remnants, the series reflects on scarcity and the potential of repurposing discarded resources through a focused, process-led approach.
the nopal lounger is a reclined armless lounge chair which explores methods for creating robust, yet disassemblable, designer furniture items. the lounger is built around a 100% recycleable aluminium frame, which is secured using stainless steel bolts. the main seat structure is woven from danish paper cord, and all of the timber elements are reclaimed victorian ash which has been stained using an iron oxide solution dervived from scrap metal.
the upholstery is a leather alternative made from nopal cactus, a product which utilises waste from the food inductry, forming the leather from unused cactus skins in the fruit production process. the cushion inners steer away from traditional petroleum-based foams and dacron, and are instead 100% natural rubber latex, created from tree sap, which is wrapped in a recycled cotton wadding.
all the fixed parts are mechanically held; the feet held in with cork, the cushion clipped on with stainless steel push studs, the cord held on with cork tabs.
